The role of transmission systems in wireless telecommunication is to provide the mechanisms for transmitting and receiving the microwave radio signals that carry the telecom traffic. The core of the system is the transceiver radio itself. Other components include antennas and network management hardware and software.


Microwave radio transmission is used across the network infrastructure: in the backbone network over long distances, in the backhaul network for transport of traffic to and from base stations, and in the access network to and from base stations and terminals.

Microwave transmission is mainly used in mobile networks, in broadcasting networks and traditional fixed line networks where part of the infrastructure is wireless, as well as in government/defense networks and in the private networks of Internet Service Providers and large enterprises.
In 2008, the total value of the microwave transmission market is estimated at around USD 6 billion. The market growth from 2008 to 2013 is estimated at 12% annually in terms of units, and 5% annually in terms of revenue.
It is common to divide the market by type/transmission capacity. The following estimates show the sizes of the three segments in 2008:
 
  • Long haul backbone: 17%
  • High and Medium capacity: 51%
  • Low capacity access: 32%
