Environment

Eltek’s environmental policy applies to its operations worldwide, and states Eltek’s ambition to reduce any adverse environmental impact of its activities as much as possible. The Group is committed to protecting the environment and the health and safety of employees, customers and society at large. A key contribution is to help reduce customers’ energy consumption through more efficient products.

Environmental principles:
A set of  environmental principles exist and cover responsible manufacturing processes, efficient use of resources, reduction and safe handling of waste, commitment to compliance with standards and continual improvement.

Products that reduce environmental footprint:
The global telecom industry accounts for approximately one percent of global energy consumption, corresponding to approximately 160 billion kWh of electricity and resulting in significant CO2 emissions. Reducing consumption through more efficient products will reduce environmental footprint significantly.

In 2008, Eltek Valere launched the Flatpack2 High Efficiency rectifier, which operates at 96 percent efficiency and halves the energy loss compared to the previously most efficient rectifiers. A Flatpack2 HE rectifier will typically reduce carbon emissions by approximately 2 tons CO2 compared to a conventional rectifier over its lifetime. Nera Network’s Evolution Long-Haul series reduces power consumption by 20 percent compared to the previous product generation, and is the most efficient long-haul product on the market.

ISO compliance:
Eltek’s ambition is to have all manufacturing and assembly sites certified according to the environmental standard ISO 14001. Eltek Valere's main sites, in China, Singapore, India, Slovakia, Norway and Germany are currently certified, as well as Nera's two main sites in Slovakia and Norway.

RoHS and WEEE compliance:
With a few minor exceptions, the Group’s products comply with the EU directives RoHS and WEEE.

Hazardous substances:
Eltek has continued its activities for reducing the use of hazardous substances in products.  All manufacturing of new products is based on lead-free soldering and a significant portion of the product portfolio was transferred to lead-free soldering in 2008. This reduces the risk of environmental impact at the end-of-life phase of products.

Waste handling
Companies in the Group have established local environmental policies and comply with local legislation and schemes for disposal of waste.

At Eltek Valere’s facilities in Drammen, 54 tons of waste were collected and distributed to Eltek Valere’s partner for treatment of disposed products. 75 percent of this was recyclable material. At the headquarters of Nera Networks in Bergen, the amount of waste was reduced by 58 percent to 57 tons, of which 50 percent was recycled.
